Losing weight is never easy. And it’s made more difficult if you don’t have the right tools.
That’s why it’s important that you set yourself up for success and not failure.
The right things to buy for weight loss are not necessarily what you might think.
So, get ready to read about what you should buy for weight loss and what you shouldn’t buy.
You Need A Scale: Which One?
Ok, first off you need a scale. I don’t care how many times you read on Reddit that the “Mirror Test” works best, the fact is that you need a good scale.
Yes, you should be documenting your weight loss journey with photos, but you should also see scientific results in the form of measurable weight.
Honestly, the first few weeks you probably won’t see any results in the mirror. And that’s why many people end up failing at their weight loss goals.
So it is vital that you get that encouragement in the form of measured weight.
I don’t think that you have to spend a lot of money on a scale. A good weight loss scale is one that is easy to use, accurate, and will not take much time to figure out.
Listen, you don’t need to use the same type of scale that they have at the doctors office. A good digital scale is fine. Here’s a few that I endorse.
Digital Bodyfat Scales
I am not a huge fan of digital bodyfat scales. But, they are much better than having to go get your bodyfat tested by water immersion techniques. That costs a lot of money and takes time. Also, they are simply easier than the caliper test. So, it doesn’t hurt if you’re looking to get a handle on your bodyfat.
Regular Digital Scales For Weight Loss
Digital scales are currently the main type of weight loss scales. They are super accurate and they do not require adjustments. That was one of the problems with the older weighted models. I like digital scales simply because they are much easier to use.
You Need A Food Scale: To Measure Calories
The other thing that you need to be mindful of is that you can’t simply make food and eat without measuring it. That’s a recipe for overeating and gaining weight.
I will go over calorie counters later on in this article, but it’s also important that you have a food scale.
Without a digital food scale, it would be impossible to correctly measure your calories. And if you don’t measure your calories you will end up overshooting the amount of food that you can eat throughout the day.
Consider things like pasta, meat, and nuts. If you eyeball them, you’re going to go over your caloric need for the day. And if you want to lose weight, then you’re going to want to keep things in check.
Food scales are super easy to use. Here’s a great video that shows exactly how to use one. Basically, i’d say that without a good food scale you’re going to have a hard time losing weight.

It’s important to hit the weights if you are looking to lose weight. Why? Because you don’t just lose weight by eating less calories unless you’re plan is to become skinny fat.
You will need to retain muscle while you diet. If you are not lifting weights when you exercise, then you are going to end up losing muscle as well.
And that’s devastating as your body composition will look like a smaller version of yourself. You will become the infamous skinny fat.
Of course, it used to be easy to stroll into any gym and hit the weights. Not anymore. Now with Covid, people are very hesitant and rightfully so to go to the gym. If you go to the gym you are exposing yourself to germs.
So the answer that many people have found is to get weights and workout at home.
Obviously not everyone has the space to set up a huge home gym. But what you can do is get a small set of dumbbells. These will let you lift weights in the comfort of your own home. Even if you have a studio apartment, this will work.
I’ve selected a bunch of different dumbell weight sets for you to choose from. There’s a small set that is perfect if you’re not looking to pack on serious muscle and also is great if you’re older and are not going to be able to lift the heavier weights.
Also, these sets, most of them, come with a dumbell tree that makes it perfect for a small space like an apartment where you don’t want the weights laying around the room.
You can do simple weight routines, it doesn’t have to be some large all out weight lifting routine. Even a simple 3 time a week weight lifting routine would be sufficient.
Yoga and Calisthenics: Get A Mat
If you’re not interested in using weights for some reason, then you can always do yoga. In fact, yoga is a great way to get toned, keep muscle, and burn fat.
Have you ever seen people who do yoga? Most of them are slim and toned.
And like lifting weights, you can practice yoga at home in your apartment. All you need is a tv (youtube on your laptop will work as well) and find yourself a good yoga Video like this one below and get yourself a yoga mat,
Protein- The Key To Proper Weight Loss
Lastly, it’s important that you have the right amount of protein in your diet. It’s not just acceptable to diet on carbs. That will only help you become skinny fat.
Read up on how people cut fat and keep muscle and the key takeaway is that they have a high protein intake. So, I would suggest making sure you have enough protein. A common number is a little under a gram of protein per pound of bodyweight.
Don’t overdo it on the protein (like drinking 5 or more shakes a day) since that will just make you sick.
For instance, a 120 pound woman can lose weight and keep muscle by drinking two protein shakes and eating salads and lean proteins (lentils for instance) with a green smoothie.
And while it might be easy for a non-vegetarian to get protein, it can be very difficult for a vegan or vegetarian. Especially if they are trying to lose weight.
What I suggest is to add protein to your morning green juice. I have a whole article covering what is the best type of protein to add to juice.
It’s going to be a mix of both a flavored protein to drink at night with water, plus a non-flavored protein to mix with your green juices.
Checklist of The Things You Want To Buy For Weight loss
- A Scale
- Protein Powder
- Some Sort Of Exercise Equipment
Once you’ve got that stuff and a decent calorie calculator, which thankfully is free, all it takes is to follow some basic restrictions (cut 400-500 calories a day) and you’ll lose weight. It sounds simple because it is. The hard part is the will power. So, at least get yourself set up for success with these tools.
