Does Green Juice Help with Constipation

So no one likes to feel constipated and it’s also an uncomfortable topic to discuss. But since you’re here and since I like to write about green juices and juicing, let’s talk about it. Simply put, does green juic help with consipatation, or can it actually worsen it?

I’ve broken this article down into easy to digest sections. We’ll start with the main question and then ocnce that has been answered, we will move on to more specific ones.

Does Green Juice Help With Constipation?

The obvious question that brought you to this page. Yes, it does. If you drink fresh green juice, it will help with constipation.

That’s not to say that drinking green juice will make you poop like some sort of laxative. What it does mean is that if you’re having trouble dealing with the bathroom, and you are not “regular” than adding in a green juice is a great way to get things moving.

Why? Simple. Soluble fiber and liquid.

When you drink a green juice you are getting healthy fiber in your drink. However, you are also getting a lot of liquid. That’s why I prefer juices to smoothies when it comes to dealing with constipation. Smoothies have a bit too much fiber.

Secondly, green drinks in particular are great because they have less of a natura sugar component than fruit juices.

Finally, green juices are a great sorce of the minerals calcium and magensium which can help with constipation.

What Juices are Good for Constipation?

does green juice help constipation

Now that we’ve discussed why green juices help with constiupation, it’s time to discuss some particular juice combos and some other juices that will help move things along.

  • Apple Juice
  • Prune Juice
  • Kale and Lemon Juice
  • Pineapple, Kale, and Apple Juice

Those are my main suggestions. You will see that I like to include apples on my list. That’s because they are high in sorbitol (which is the natural sugar that is found in prunes and helps with constipation).

I also like addin apples to kales and other greens because it helps improve the flavor. And why not add something that tastes good as long as you are at it.

How Long Does It Take For Apple Juice To Help Constipation?

does green juice constipation

Everyone has heard that apple juice is good to drink if you can’t go to the bathroom. Drinking apple juice has long been a home remedy to curing constipation.

And it’s not store brought apple juice that is going to get the job done. It might move something, but if you really need to clean out the pipes you want to make fresh apple juice. I wrote an entire guide that covers how to make apple juice at home that you should check out.

It’s not a one size fits all issue when it comes to helping relieve your constipation. Some people get almost immediate relief. Other people have to wait a day or so.

Remember, these green juice alternatives as not as strong (and also not harmful for you) in the same way that a commercial laxative is.

I would remain calm though. However, the general rule of thumb that most medical experts tell you is that anymore than three days is an issue.

If you’re constipated for more than three days, it’s time to consider taking a laxative. You don’t want to end up relying on laxatives, but you also don’t want to get impacted. If you become impacted, then drinking water and over the counter stuff won’t really help. You are either going to have to visit the emergency room or a local urgent care. The doctors can preseribe medictions that are stool softners and even manually remove hard poo.

But before it gets to that stage, up your water intake. Increse your green juice intake. And make sure that you’re not relying on otc remedies.

Is Orange Juice Good for Constipation?

is orange juice good for constipation

So most of the time when people talk about fruits that will help with constipation they focus on apples. And that’s fine because apples are helpful.

However, there are other fruits that you might want to invetigate. Namely Oranges and Grapefruits.

These juices (if you drink them freshy and not storebrought) are also good at helping with consipation. The reason all has to due with a compound called naringenin (see revelenat studies about naringenin here).

So, what I might suggest you do is make two juices. Make a citrus based juice (and juice the skin as long as it’s an organic orange or grapefruit) and then later in the day make a green juice.

It’s a great way to get both the power of citrus and dark leafy greens into your consipation batteling diet!

How Fast Does Pear Juice Work for Constipation?

Before we talk about how fast pear juice works for constipation, let’s talk about why pear juice is good for you if you’re backed up.

Well, remember when we spoke about apple juice and constipation, well it’s the same thing. The same good soluble fiber that is found in apples is found in pears. Not only that, but pears have much more sorbitol than apples. So, you can drink less of the pear juce and get the same benefits.

The problem I find is getting a good pear to juice. You don’t want to get tinned pears, instead you want to buy fresh pears. Anything tinned will normally have minimal nutrients and also it will have added sugars.

Again, the speed at which the pear juice works will depend on how constipated you are and how long you have had an issue with your diet.

My suggestion is to begin to incoroprate these dietary changes into your life so that you stop being constipated.

Is Cranberry Juice Good for Constipation?

cranberries constipation

Most of the science around cranberries has focus on it’s help with UTI and Yeast Infections and other issues non-related to constipation. But does that mean that cranberry juice is of no use?

Well, not entirely. First, I don’t think that you should regard cranberry juice as something that will help you with your constipation in and of itself.

But, I do think that it can be combined with other things that can (apples, pears, leafy greens). The benefit to adding cranberries to your diet is that you can get the added benefit of improving your gut health. And an improved gut health is key to preventing constipation.

A paper published and presented in 2015 outlines how cranberries are linked to a healthy gut health (and also improved heart healt).

Drinks That Help You Poop Immediately

does green juice make you poop

Unfortunately, if you’re looking for instant relief, then a natural juice isn’t going to cut it. There is no juice that you can drink that is naturall and not a chemical laxative that will have you runnign to the bathroom.

But, if you haven’t let the problem progress to the point where you haven’t gone to the toilet in more than 3 days, then juices can help.

It’s a combination of hydrating your self, making sure that you don’t become dried out and also taking in soluble fiber. The goal is to make sure that your poop is soft and not hard. The only way to do this is to drink lots of liquods and make sure you are eatin the right ammount of fiber.

Does Kale Help with Constipation?

can you put leafy greens in a juicer

Kale is the leafy green that I would suggest you add to your diet if you have a habbit of becoming constipated. Spinach is good, but it has a lot of iron so you don’t want to juice straight spinach juice too often.

But Kale is certainly fine for regular consumption.

I would mix kale with one of the other foods from this article. So, make a kale and apple juice or a kale and pineapple juice.

If you start drinking one of these drinks a day, then after a week or so you are likely going to see some really positive results.
