Will drinking coffee effect any positive benefits that you get from juicing? Will coffee when combined with fresh juices make you feel sick?
Great questions, and it makes sense for anyone who is planning on starting to make fresh juices to know if they can continue with their morning cup of coffee.
So, what I’m going to do here is review some of the basic questions that you might have regarding juicing and coffee and discuss if there is any problem with combining the two:
Spoiler- There’s almost no issue.
How About Decaf? Can You Dink That When Juicing?
Because we jump into the main discussion about drinking coffee while juicing, let’s make it clear that we’re going to be discussing regular coffee.
Decaf isn’t the same as regular coffee, so we need to address that separately. First, let’s see what the concern is regarding decaf coffee.
How is coffee decaffeinated? Well, there are lots of ways, but they all involve soaking the coffee beans in a solvent (normally methylene chloride). Some articles have even linked formaldehyde to decaffeinated coffee, though this is no longer a solvent used.
So, you have to be aware that coffee beans use chemicals to pull the caffeine out of the coffee. And while regular coffee has been linked to lower levels of cancer, the same benefits are yet to be found wihttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5782814/th decaf.
As a general rule, I advise against drinking too much decaf coffee. So, I would of course suggest that if you are starting to drink fresh juice for health reasons then you would also want to skip drinking decaf as it’s not something that is super healthy for you.
What About Regular Coffee?
Regular coffee is a separate thing from decaf. It’s healthier than decaf, and so you don’t have the same worries that you do when you’re drinking dinking decaf coffee.
Regular coffee actually has a ton of benefits, especially if you buy organic coffee.
The one drawback that I would point out that you should be aware of is that caffeine can deplete your body of vitamins and minerals.
So, in effect, coffee and juice make a great combo. Why? Well, I wouldn’t suggest drinking coffee if you already don’t drink coffee. But if you’re someone who already does drink coffee, then adding a green juice to your diet is actually a positive.
The juice will replenish the lost vitamins (b vitamins, for instance) and minerals that high doses of caffeine depletes.
The reason I don’t advocate cutting out coffee if you’re already drinking it is that it does have tremendous health benefits, such as lowering your risk of dementia, many forms of cancer, and lots of other benefits.
I suggest getting organic coffee and whole beans. You can grind them yourself (I’ve linked below to some great organic whole bean coffee as well as my favorite coffee grinder).
Should You Drink Coffee with Juice?
I would not suggest combining the two. Simply because it isn’t a good match. I would have your coffee by itself, as you normally do. If you’re the kind of person who drinks a coffee in the morning, then you can keep doing that…and have your juice later in the day.
If you want to switch it up, then you can have your green juice in the morning and switch your coffee to at work where you won’t normally have access to fresh juices. I am not a big fan of making juice and then taking it into work.
Can I Drink Celery Juice After Coffee?
A super popular morning juice routine is fresh celery juice. I like to add lemon to this as well, I find that plain celery is just a bit too plain.
The problem here is that a lot of people, myself included, like to have coffee in the morning. So, what do you do?
Well, if you’re not in a rush you can have celery juice after coffee. Just make sure that there is enough time spaced out between the two.
It’s not that the celery juice itself will cancel out the coffee, or vice versa. It’s more of the fact that the two drinks consumed too close together might upset your stomach.
But it depends. Are you the type who can have orange juice and coffee for breakfast? If so, then there’s no problem. But if you are someone who can’t drink coffee and orange juice without feeling a bit stick to your stomach, then you will want to wait a bit before drinking the two together.
Fasting? Can You Drink Coffee on a Juice Fast?
Coffee, as long as it’s black and without cream or sugar, will not break a fast. And if you’re drinking fresh juices as part of your juice fast then it’s fine.
Many people will use black coffee as an appetite suppressant during a fast, and it’s a great and healthy way to go about curbing hunger. As long as you don’t over do it on the caffeine (don’t start drinking 7 cups a day obviously!).
However, be aware that if you are on a juice fast, then your coffee will probably impact you more than if you were eating your normal diet. That’s because there is nothing in your stomach to slow the absorption of the caffeine.
If you were to eat your normal diet and have regular foods, then drinking coffee will effect you differently.
So, make sure to moderate the amount of caffeine and coffee you drink during the first few days of the juice fast to make sure you are not getting too much caffeine in your diet.
If you are on a juice fast, then you’re probably wise to have a green juice in the morning. I covered this elsewhere, but the best time to drink green juice for weight loss is in the morning.
And if you combine coffee with that juice, not immediately but in the same morning window, it can help to get you through the day without the bothersome hunger pangs.
