Best Juicer for Turmeric: Read Before you Buy

Turmeric is one of the most talked about health foods in the world. It’s not simply a spice that you find in Indian cooking. It has become well known as a powerful anti-oxidant and overall helpful nutrient for all diseases.

I will link to some of the studies at the end of this article, but the science is quite clear. Turmeric can help with everything from heart disease, cancer prevention, dementia and other age related diseases, as well as weight loss and general skin protection (skin cancer from the sun, for instance).

However, it is very important that you get turmeric from the right source. You do not want to get contaminated turmeric. This is so very important that it deserves a huge warning sign.

Be careful buying turmeric powder because it can be contaminated with cancer causing chemicals such as lead!

Ideally, the best way to get turmeric into your diet is to make a turmeric shot. This is something you make with fresh turmeric juice. You don’t make it with powdered turmeric, though some people do.

Fresh turmeric is better. If you really don’t want to juice turmeric, I will list some of the best organic turmeric powders at the end of the article. These would be the only ones I would recommend that you take a look at.

My personal pick for the best juicer for turmeric is this one.

Can You Juice Turmeric?

Yes you can juice turmeric. Many people like to add fresh turmeric root to their juices. And you don’t have to peel turmeric before juicing.

I have found that juicing turmeric with something like an organic lemon is a great way to mask the earthy flavor of the turmeric. It’s the same idea that you see discussed when people say you should mix lemon juice with leafy greens.

You can also add organic turmeric powder to your fresh juices if you don’t want to juice turmeric, or if you can’t find fresh turmeric root.

However, it is good to realize that you can juice turmeric root if it’s something you are interested in trying.

And turmeric is actually much easier to juice than a lot of things you might already be juicing. For instance, if you’ve ever juice kale or pineapple or parsley, then juicing turmeric won’t be a problem.

The main thing about juicing turmeric is that you want to select the right type (organic, locally grown in the USA) and then make sure you clean it. It’s a root, and therefore you need to scrub it to make sure you don’t have dirt on it.

Think of it in a similar way to when you would clean a carrot or beetroot before juicing them.

Should You Juice Turmeric?

This is another entirely different topic.

Most people, including the experts, are on board with taking turmeric for health reasons. There is an entire industry surrounding taking turmeric pills as supplements. Most of the large health food chains will have turmeric vitamins, turmeric teas, and even turmeric flavored shots for sale.

I would advise that if you are looking to supplement with turmeric that you either make your own turmeric shots or juices at home or find a high quality organic turmeric powder and add it to your juice or smoothies or cook with it.

Turmeric in large doses taken by pill isn’t ideal. You should instead juice the turmeric occasionally (perhaps once or twice a week with lemon) or cook with turmeric powder.

Long term studies have all focused on people who consume turmeric in food. There are many studies that look to investigate the impact of turmeric extract pills (almost always coupled with black pepper) but as a rule the majority of the positive benefits are linked to consumption of turmeric in food (Indian cooking, turmeric powder in dishes, or turmeric root used in food).

The real reason that I’m in favor of juicing turmeric as opposed to cooking with turmeric powder is that you can get organic turmeric root. Foreign made and processed turmeric powders are not safe. It is very hard to find a turmeric powder that you can trust. I will link to some good brands below, but my main suggestion is to just make the juice yourself.

And turmeric juice when mixed with lemon is a great energy drink. It’s way healthier than something like those sugar and caffeine beverages that you see for sale at the gym.

What Type of Juicer Works with Turmeric?

The only type of juicer that works with turmeric is an auger juicer. You should only consider juicing turmeric if you have a masticating style juicer that uses an auger.

Why? Because turmeric is like carrots and beets and other hard vegetables. Much like those vegetables, the juicer cannot separate the pulp from the juice if the juicer uses blades.

Only augers are able to separate pulp from juice adequately. Otherwise, if you do happen to use a juicer that uses a blade design, you are simply going to get a messy wet pulp.

What I suggest you do is to not juice turmeric unless you have a good juicer. You don’t need to spend a ton of money. There are decent juicers that use an auger design that don’t cost a lot. You don’t have to break the bank.

While I use an Omega juicer and have juiced turmeric without an issue, you don’t have to only juice turmeric with Omega juicers. You can get any of the better rated auger juicers that are out there.

Does Turmeric Stain Your Juicer?

Turmeric is well known to be one of the most powerful natural dyes around. People across India and the Middle east use turmeric as a natural dye. But that doesn’t mean it will stain your juicer.

If you use a juicer that is made of some plastic parts (which many auger juicers are) then you will have to be conscious to wash the juicer parts right after you are done juicing.

You should make this a habit anyway. There is no good reason to let your juicer sit around and get sticky and not clean it.

Cleaning your juicer after every use is just a good way to handle your juicer. It helps to keep it in top working condition. Neglecting to clean your juicer isn’t just bad in regards to staining it, but it will also lead to the juicer not working at optimal speed and overall making it run worse.

So, just disassemble the juicer and clean it after every wash. This will certainly make sure the auger isn’t stained, but it will also make sure that your juicer stays in new condition.

Finally, a note since people should be aware of turmeric’s staining potential. The bigger problem is that you want to make sure that you don’t have turmeric juice spill onto fabric or cloth. So, if for some reason you happen to have a tablecloth near your juicer, be very careful about spilling juice.

You might even want to remove the tablecloth while juicing. If you happen to splash turmeric juice onto the tablecloth, then you’re going to have a staining problem. Turmeric is more likely to stain fabric than your juicer, so this is the area where I’d proceed with the most caution.

How to Juice Turmeric Without a Juicer?

You really can’t juice turmeric without a juicer. There are some crazy instructions online, but I would suggest that you skip all of them and simple use a regular juicer.

If you don’t own a juicer, I obviously think you should get one since they are multi-purpose and I’m a big fan of juicing. But even if you don’t, then you can still do something with turmeric.

My advice would be to add a small amount of turmeric to a smoothie. It’s not the same as a turmeric shot (a lemon juice and turmeric juice, for instance) but it’s better than nothing.

However, if you’re looking to do a lemon and turmeric shot before work or before you hit the gym, then you should just go ahead and buy a juicer. There are a lot of things you can use it for besides making turmeric juice: fresh apple juice, green drinks that are full of vitamins and antioxidants, and a ton of other great things.

I have a whole article that covers what you can do with an Omega juicer. If you’re interested in learning more, then I suggest reading that article. It covers some of the best juicers that you can make in addition to turmeric shots.
