Of all of the green vegetables that you’re planning on juicing, celery requires the most attention. Unlike spinach or other greens, when you’re going to make celery juice, you need to be very mindful that you choose the best juicer.
There are a number of reasons that celery requires special juicers. First, it’s very fibrous. It’s different than kale and spinach. Whereas those two vegetables are difficult to juice in a regular juicer, they are not totally impossible to get usable green juice from. But celery is different. If you use the wrong juicer to make celery juice, you will end up with barely drinkable liquid that’s a far cry from fresh, pure, and unheated celery juice.
First, let’s take a look at why you would want to drink celery juice, where the new hype is coming from, the scientific basis behind drinking celery juice, as well as how to chose the best juicer for celery juice.
Why Is Celery Juice So Popular
Celery has always been healthy. Check in any health book from the 70s or 80s and you will see sections devoted to celery. The scientific literature on celery has always been positive and spoken about the benefits celery has. Those health benefits include: lowering blood pressure, cleansing the blood, and improved bad breath.
However, the reason that celery is now so popular is that it’s become the cause du jour of certain health conscious celebs. Look on Instagram and you are likely to see a “detox drink” or some other celery based concoction. And that’s not to say that these Instagram celebs are wrong. Celery is a super-food.
A lot of the buzz around celery can be linked to the Medical Medium book which covered the health benefits of detoxing with celery. Basically, if you’ve not already read or heard about the book, here is a brief outline. The author is a claimed Medium (as in someone who communicates with Spirits). In the book he discusses healing foods that have the ability to cure certain ailments. Celery is really big in his list of power nutrients.
You Don’t Have To Be A Medium or Psychic To Know Celery Is Healthy!
The simple fact of the matter is that New Age stuff like mediums and other spiritual stuff can turn off a lot of people. Some people want cold hard facts. Well, that’s the great thing about celery and celery juice. It’s not something that has no basis in scientific studies. There is quite a lot of serious research into the health benefits of celery.
The great attention that the medical medium brought to celery is great, as many people who might not otherwise be inclined to drink celery juice now know about it.
What Are The Health Benefits Of Celery Juice
Celery is healthy for many reasons. The first and most obvious is the fiber content. However, unless you plan on making celery juice in a blender, then you’re not going to be getting much fiber in your celery juice. But thats ok!
The other, and frankly more interesting health benefits are the ones that are connected to the antioxidants. Two of the most important antioxidants in celery are luteolin and
apigenin. Study after study has shown that celery has incredibly potent antioxidants. There are even peer reviewed studies that look at the benefit celery juice has on people who are taking chemotherapy type anti-cancer drugs.
And the reason that celery is such a popular source of these antioxidants is that it’s the most convenient food. For instance, if you look at the antioxidant apigenin, the main food sources include parsley, chamomile tea, and then celery. Parsley is surely a superfood, however, it’s something that you can overdo. If you juice too much parsley, you can be feel unwell as it’s a diuretic.
So, the basic healthy benefits of celery juice include:
- Weight Loss
- Detox
- Liver Cleanse
- Lowering High Blood Pressure
The Best Juicer For Celery Juice
Selecting the best juicer for celery is going to require you to pick:
- A Slow Juicer
- A Cold Press Juicer
- A Masticating Juicer
Celery requires a slow press juicer because you are dealing with a tough, fibrous vegetable. It’s similar to cabbage that way. A slow press auger style juicer is necessary to squeeze all of juice out. Slow RPM is superior to fast when it comes to juicing. A too fast process will leave lots of juice in the pulp.
Cold press is important because any heat created will destroy the enzymes and other anti-oxidants in the juice.
Any of the juicers shown here are going to be great at juicing celery. You can check out each one and see the pros and cons (they namely come down to how much counter space you have, how easy to clean they are, and the cost). The Omega is my go to and I find it really easy to clean. Simply hold the parts under running water and use a small brush that comes with the juicer.
All of the above juicers are great for juicing celery. There are some that are better than others, but I wanted to include a few at different price points. If you were really looking for the best juicer for celery, then I would focus on the Omega Horizantal and the Greenstar. However, if you are on a budget and are looking for a good juicer for the money, then you can’t go wrong with an entry level juicer from that list.
My personal juicer and the one that I’ve used for years, is the Omega. It’s tried and true. You can’t go wrong with it and it’s at a decent entry level price point.
My next suggestion is the GreenStar. I’ve used these in the past (not owned them, but I know people who do) and it’s certainly an excellent juicer. It has a twin auger system, so you are getting twice the juicing power.
Make Sure Your Celery Juicer Is An Auger Style
Most importantly, though, is that all of these auger juicers are going to be slow press and masticating. Whenever you are juicing celery, you want to make certain that you steer clear of the fast juicers that produce heat and use a chopping motion. That might be find for soft fruit that you’re looking to juice (oranges, perhaps) but when you are juicing celery and other fibrous leafy greens, you need to choose a slow press masticating juicer.
Can You Juice Celery In A Blender?
Sometimes people don’t own a juicer and they want to know if they can juice fruits or leafy greens in a blender. The answer is yes and no. You can certainly make a fruit juice in a blender. But I’d caution everyone from attempting to make any sort of leafy greens or celery based juice in a blender. It’s simply an issue of there being too much pulp.
While blenders are awesome at making certain things (nut butters, green smoothies, for instance) they are not designed to make juices. The whole point of a juicer is that you are going to extract the juice from the pulp. When you’re dealing with celery, which has one of the highest and more dense amount of pulp, then I would really suggest you not attempt to use a blender.
Blending and juicing are two separate things. I’d recommend using an auger style blender as opposed to a blender and then try using a strainer or worse, some cheese cloth contraption.
Which Style Of Juicer is Best For Celery?
I cover this in more depth here, but the basic take away is that you should get a masticating juicer.
The masticating juicer is simply a better design for extracting all of the juice from a hard vegetables and leafy greens. Both of which celery falls under.
