What Time of Day is Best to Drink Green Juice?

Making green juice takes time. It’s super healthy and if you’re planning on making only one green juice per day then you’ll want to know when you should drink it.

First, let me stress that I don’t think there is a huge benefit to drinking a green juice in the morning as opposed to the night and vice versa.

There is a huge benefit to drinking one every day, though. So, if your schedule dictates that you need to drink your juice in the morning, or afternoon, or evening, then you should go with what works.

What I’ve set out to do here is go into some detail about the pros and cons of drinking green juice at different times of the day.

There are some benefits to drinking your green juice at different times. Some of that comes down to your lifestyle, however. So it’s not really a one size fits all answer.

Let’s begin by looking at some of the different questions about when you should best drink your juice and what different lifestyle considerations come into effect.

Can You Drink Juice Any Time During the Day?

First off, let’ address the big question that many people wonder. Is it ok to drink juice any time during the day?

Yes. It’s perfectly fine. It’s not like coffee or tea where you shouldn’t drink them later in the day because they have caffeine.

The advise against soda, coffee, and tea later in the day is due to their caffeinated content. Juice doesn’t contain caffeine.

Also, you don’t have the issue like alcohol where drinking it will disrupt your sleep.

So, feel free to drink juice early in the day or later in the day.

There are some people who do advise you to not drink it right before bed, but that’s in line with not eating or drinking anything right before bed as it can disrupt your sleep.

So, as long as you don’t drink your green juice right before going to bed, you’ll be fine.

Best Time to Drink Juice for Weight Loss?

Ok, so let’s say you are looking to lose weight. When would the best time be to drink your green juice?

The time maters less than the method. You should be using a green juice primarily as a replacement for more calorie heavy meals.

So, what would work best is to swap out either a breakfast, lunch, or dinner with a green juice.

You should want to reduce calories when you are attempting to lose weight. It’s a simple formula when you are looking to lose weight on a diet. Most of the time the guidelines suggest dropping your daily calories by a maximum of 500 calories. You don’t want to overextend yourself or do anything that would be considered a crash diet.

Most people do best either swapping out their breakfast or lunch. However, it’s more of a personal decision as you really should go with what feels best for you.

Are you someone who needs a heavy breakfast to function and tend to eat lighter around midday or at night? Or do you just grab a bagel or donut with coffee in the morning?

Figuring out what works best with your body and daily routine will be best for you.

Should You Drink Green Juice on an Empty Stomach?

This is also somewhat person dependent. I know that I like to drink a green juice first thing in the morning. I make mine with celery and green apples and whole lemons. Sometimes I add parsley or kale.

For me, it’s perfect and doesn’t upset my stomach. However, some people prefer to have some sort of food in them before they have a juice.

Again, this is something that is unique to each individual. If you are reading a website or blog online and you see someone mention that you should always drink green juice on an empty stomach or never drink on an empty stomach, rest assured they don’t have a clue about what they’re talking about.

Try it out both ways. Some people find that drinking green juice with food makes them feel bloated. So, for them, the obvious answer is to drink green juice on an empty stomach.

How Long Should You Wait to Eat After Drinking Green Juice?

If you are someone who feels that you get bloated or feel too full if you drink green juice soon after eating, then the best thing to do would be to space it out several hours.

You don’t want to drink a juice on a full stomach if you’re someone who happens to get bloated. You’ll feel unwell and this will discourage you from making juicing a part of your daily habit.

I would suggest that the best approach would be to simply hold off on drinking your juice for at least several hours (4+) after a big meal.

That way you aren’t flooding your body with too much material and nutrients to digest.

This is one reason why I think that having your morning juice as a replacement for your breakfast is a good choice.

An optimal schedule for most people would be to have a green juice for breakfast, then have lunch a few hours later at a scheduled time. If you find that you’re still hungry after an hour of having the juice then you could have something light such as a protein bar, or some trail mix.

Benefits of Drinking Green Juice in the Morning

So, let’s stop for a moment and consider the benefits of drinking a green juice in the morning.

Well, first off it’s an easy way to ease into the day. It’s not as extreme as doing an intermittent fast, which some people find that they aren’t comfortable with.

But it’s good in that it doesn’t stress out your system. Many people find that drinking green juice is the perfect way to ease into the day.

Instead of eating a big heavy breakfast, you are more geared towards a lighter juice that provides you with calories and nutrition but is not going to weight heavy on you.

If you’re someone who likes to hit the gym in the morning, then eating a big breakfast might put a damper on that. But juicing won’t. In fact, drinking a green juice before you workout can actually be beneficial for your workout because it adds nutrients and calories but doesn’t cause your digestion to slow down.

I even consider drinking gree juice first in the morning a good time to choose if you’re looking for lose weight.

Can You Drink Green Juice at Night?

Sure. If you’re someone who is looking to lose weight, and prefers eating a larger breakfast and lunch, then skipping dinner and swapping in a green juice can be an excellent alternative.

The one thing that I would suggest you avoid is having dinner and then drinking a green juice immediately after. That’s not going to help you or your nights sleep.

I would advise against either:

  • Drinking Juice too Closely to Bedtime
  • Drinking Green Juice Right After You Eat a Meal

The optimal way to drink your green juice at night would be as a meal substitute. It’s really the only way to go about it.

Benefits of Drinking Green Juice At Night

There are a few benefits to drinking your green juice at night. First, it reduces the digestive stress you put your body through.

By limiting the amount of food your body has to process, you’re effectively giving yourself a break in the same way a fast does, but without having to undergo as extreme a process as fasting requires.

Also, if you’re rushed for time in the morning, then making your green jucie at night is certainly less stressful.

I know that if I want to get up and head out right away, and don’t have time to even make coffee, then I’m certainly switching it up and making my juice at night.

You might also want to consider making your juice at night and then drinking it in the morning. I covered this topic before in an article that discusses how long green juice lasts in the fridge. My suggestion would be to hold it for a maximum time of overnight.
