I drink green drinks because they are healthy. The only problem with them is that they can taste kind of off putting if you don’t combine the right vegetables and fruits. One major problem with kale juices is that if you make it too heavy with leafy greens it can be really strong for anyone new to juicing.

The simple kale juice recipe will be at the bottom of the article.

Experienced juicers can usually handle these straight kale juices, but even those people usually add other ingredients. They do this for a few reasons. First, it will give you a better flavor. Kale is super healthy, but it is not the nicest tasting juice. If you add something like a nice sour apple (granny smith) and some carrots, they you will have a much more pleasant flavor.

I have found that you want to add two types of ingredients into a kale juice. You want something that has a strong flavor: sour apples, carrots. This will help compensate for heavy kale flavor. You don’t have to add much. In fact, one Granny Smith apple is enough for a whole bunch of kale.

Granny Smith Apples

The reason I like the Granny Smith apple is that it has such a strong flavor. Plus, it is healthy. And it mixes well. Other things like citrus, don’t mix well with kale—with one exception: lemon, which I will talk about in the next section. The Granny Smith is the perfect apple for juicing because it produces a lot of juice and it has a nice sour flavor. You don’t want to mix sweet with kale juice because it will be a weird flavor. There are lots of apples that are good to eat, but are not good to juice. I like Empire, Cortlands, Rome, Gala, and Golden Delicious. But none of those apples are really good for juicing. The Granny Smith is really the perfect choice. It produces a lot of juice and the juice is nice and sour-not too sweet.

Lemons and Kale Juice

I will add a lemon, rind and all, to my kale juice because the lemon is really powerful. I add the whole rind became that is where the lemon oil is. Lemon oil is a powerful anti-bacterial and it is good for nerves. Another reason I add lemons is because lemon juice is really good for breaking up potential kidney stones. They recommend that you add lemon juice to your water if you are worried about kidney stones. I just add a lemon occasionally to the kale juice.

Celery and Kale Juice

This is one that you should always consider. Celery is a superfood like kale. It has tons of benefits. In fact, some of its most important benefits are those that kale doesn’t do. For instance, Celery is possible of lowering blood pressure. I originally started juicing to deal with high blood pressure so all of my juice recipes contained celery. Now, the thing to remember is that celery will not substantial alter the flavor of a kale juice. If you find that your kale juice is not palatable, then I would add a strong flavor component like Granny Smith Apples or Carrots. That said, I always add celery. It is a superfood and it is so important.

Carrots and Kale Juice

Carrots are sweet. They also complement the kale because they are rich in beta-carotene. One reason many people drink kale juice is because it contains nutrients for your eyes. Carrots are the most famous veggies for “eyes”. So it makes perfect sense.

Simple Kale Juice Recipe

This is for about two glasses. You can increase it if you want more. I always suggest making only the juice you will drink and not make a lot to store. But, if you don’t have the time to make juice everyday, then you can make some and refrigerate it for the next day.

1 Handful of Kale. If you are getting bagged, chopped kale, then use about two cups. If you are buying kale by the bunch, then just chop off the bottom of the stem. I do juice the stem. Make sure you are using an auger juicer because that is the best juicer for leafy greens.

 1 Granny Smith Apple.

 1 Lemon

 3 Stalks of Celery

 1 medium sized carrot.
